Building an error-corrected superconducting quantum computer: progress and outstanding challenges

Joseph Bardin (Google Quantum AI)

In this talk, I will review Google’s approach to quantum computing, highlighting recent progress and outstanding challenges in realizing a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The talk will begin with a discussion of Google’s quantum computing roadmap. Next I will describe the hardware stack, focusing on the quantum processor technology and the electronics required to run the quantum computer. I will then describe recent experimental progress, highlighting demonstrations of beyond-classical random circuit sampling and quantum error correction. The talk will conclude with a discussion of major electronics-related challenges associated with scaling superconducting quantum computers to the extent required for useful fault-tolerant quantum computing.
